 VISTA Summer Associates

This summer, The Heart of Texas Homeless Coalition has been fortunate enough to hire four VISTA Summer Associates. These four new additions were chosen to help four of our agencies in their fight against poverty for ten weeks. Please read on to learn a little bit about each of these individuals.

Neil Lumbard- Waco Housing Authority

My name is Neil D. Lumbard. I just turned 20 in late April and graduated this May from MCC with an A.A. degree in General Education, with an emphasis in the Arts. In the near future, I am intent on studying film at UT and will participate in the local independent film community. My main interests include film direction and scriptwriting.
As a VISTA member working with Kate Ross CCLC, Waco TECH, It has been my pleasure to assist the Waco Community through non-profit service. I decided to work with VISTA because of my interest in helping the Waco community, and I felt that this would be a good summer job to have at the same time. My main area of work will be marketing. I will also be working in an educational summer program  that helps young people learn how to use computers, developing a website, and helping to oversee grant research. I hope to achieve a lot at my service organization and am looking forward to learning more about my community and the ways I can help it continue to grow and succeed.

Kristin Pope- Mission Waco’s Meyer Center

In 2004, I graduated from Berry College with a degree in Government. Since then, I’ve spent my time managing coffee shops, most recently a Starbucks. One of Starbucks’ guiding principles is to be involved with the local community. Taking this principle to heart, I began working with Project Homeless Connect, where I met Jenny Clines, an Americorps VISTA volunteer.
Through Jenny, I learned more about the VISTA program and other volunteer opportunities in Waco. I chose VISTA because of my interest in helping my local community. It is also providing me an opportunity to learn about how an established nonprofit addresses issues in its community.
Currently, I am working for Mission Waco at the Meyers Center. I help participants get the services they desire, and I assist with the Homeless Management Information System.

 Jordanna Dagley- ACTS Christian Fellowship

My name is Jordanna Dagley and for as long as I can remember I’ve loved helping people. When the information about VISTA came across my table I was interested at once! This summer I will be working at Acts Christian Fellowship – an inner-city church with a vision to reach the poor and homeless community. Acts has many poverty and homeless programs that I will be participating in and hopefully will help to make more efficient and reach a greater number of people. Two of my main focuses will be on The Storehouse that Acts runs every Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and garnering support from the community to create a daytime area for homeless people to come to in one of the buildings owned by Acts. I am so excited about this summer and cannot wait to see all that happens!

 Alec Warren- Family Abuse Center

My name is Alec Warren. I decided to participate in the Americorps VISTA Summer Associates Program in order to better utilize my strengths where they intersect with the community’s needs. I will be volunteering at the Family Abuse Center. The majority of my time will be spent with children. I will be attending children’s groups and leading summer activities as well as teaching positive communication, conflict resolution, and anger management to youth in the community. Through working with the Family Abuse Center, I am able to provide warmth, care, protection, confidence, encouragement, and constructive discipline to a group of children that most desperately need to be shown that “love doesn’t have to hurt.”
