Each year the heart of Texas Homeless Coalition sponsors two major events. Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, co-sponsored with the McLennan County Hunger Coalition, works to improve public awareness and commitment toward homelessness issues. Project Homeless Connect is a one-day one-stop-shop designed to connect the city’s homeless with appropriate social services.
In January 2005, the Mayor’s Homelessness Committee was formed along with five (5) sub-committees representing over 25 area agencies made up of members of the H.O.T. Homeless Coalition, community leaders, local business employers, W.I.S.D., hospitals, colleges, media, concerned residents, social agencies, and churches. The result was the Mayor’s 10-Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness in Waco.
In accordance with a mandate from HUD, member agencies of the HOT Homeless Coalition, numerous volunteers, homeless individuals, church members and City employees take part in a point in time count of unsheltered homeless persons during January of odd-numbered years.
